Race of Champions to expand
The incredible success of this year's Race of Champions, which attracted 60,000 spectators and a host of world racing stars to the Stade de France in Paris last weekend, could prompt a series of regional finals in the next few years
Organiser Fredrick Johnson has said that the interest prompted by the growing popularity of the event has led to an increase of nations hoping to field teams for the event - as well as venues which want to stage the spectacular.
Speaking to Autosport about the future of the event, Johnson said: "We proved that the idea of doing it in a stadium where the fans can get close to the action is the right one.
"Before the event we had many stadiums approaching us to run similar events for them and many nations chasing us to have teams, and what happened will only have increased that interest.
"So we are investigating running regional or qualifying events before the world final, although it won't necessarily be by 2005."
Johnson already has an option to keep the event at the Stade de France for the next two years, although it can be relocated in that period.
