Peugeot's Solberg and Stohl both crash
OMV Peugeot teammates Henning Solberg and Manfred Stohl have crashed in separate incidents at the same corner, leading to Stohl's immediate retirement
The teammates crashed at a fourth-gear, right-hander bend, two kilometres from the end of SS11.
Solberg, running in sixth, completed an end-over-end roll but was fortunate to be able to continue, albeit with severe panel damage.
Approximately 15 seconds after Solberg left the scene, Stohl went off at the same corner, but he was unable to get his car restarted when he went into the ditch.
"Maybe we were a bit too quick into the corner," Solberg told autosport.com. "The back wheel dropped into a ditch, which kicked the front of the car up.
"We clipped something and rolled end over end. I don't know how many times we rolled. It wasn't a quick corner - maybe fourth gear."
When Solberg's car was upside down, the roof scooped a considerable amount of snow into the car, and without a windscreen, Solberg and co-driver Cato Menkerud drove back to the service park in temperatures of minus eight degrees centigrade and a biting wind. The pair couldn't get their thermal jackets either out of the back of the car because it was full of snow.
The team now face a race against time to get Solberg's car fixed in the current 30 minutes service period. Solberg will not be allowed to continue if the rally scrutineers are not satisfied that his car is safe and the roll cage has not been compromised.
Stohl, who was fifth at the time, has retired from leg. When the car is returned to service park, the team will decide whether he can restart tomorrow.
