Moya: Loeb not unbeatable
Subaru sporting director Luis Moya believes Sebastien Loeb is beatable - but it is just a question of luck that nothing bad has happened to him this season
The Frenchman has only dropped four points from a possible 60 so far this year, with two second places followed by four consecutive victories.
He did go off the road while leading the Monte Carlo rally, however because the off was on the last stage of the first leg he was able to rejoin under superrally regulations and climb back to second.
Moya, a former co-driver of double world champion Carlos Sainz, likened Loeb's current dominance to Tommi Makinen's form in the late 1990s, when the Finn won four consecutive championships from 1996 to 1999.
"Loeb is not unbeatable," Moya told wrc.com. "Every driver can be beaten at any point in his career. What is happening with Loeb is that he is going through an excellent period and he is using that to maximum effect. Good luck also counts.
"Tommi Makinen was champion four times in succession and I remember that he would sometimes leave the road in the only place where there was nothing that could break his car or hit a rock with his tyres and not have a puncture.
"Nothing lasts forever. One day, you hit a stone that was not there during the recce and a tyre will go flat in a few seconds.
"Last year, with [Petter] Solberg, Subaru was leading in Australia when a kangaroo jumped into his path at 180 km/h. In Japan, he struck a stone thrown by the car in front of him and his suspension was damaged.
"That is pure bad luck, something that does not happen so often to Sebastien Loeb, apparently."
