McRae v Burns rivalry heats up

Colin McRae's bitter rivalry with Richard Burns has stepped up a gear in the run up to the championship-deciding NetworkQ Rally GB, with the Scot claiming that if he can't take the title, he would rather it went to Tommi Makinen than to fellow Brit Burns

McRae heads to the final round of the World Rally Championship in 10 days' time at the top of the standings, ahead of Mitsubishi's Tommi Makinen by just one point. Burns is one point behind the Finn and Carlos Sainz is a further seven adrift in fourth place, meaning any of the four could still take the drivers' crown.

However, Ford ace McRae says that if he does not win, he would prefer Makinen to claim his fifth championship, rather than see arch rival Burns lift his first.

"I certainly don't want Burnsie to win!" said McRae. "If he does, he won't be able to fit his head through a normal sized door! If you really want to get down to it, I would rather see Tommi win. I'm the only British world champion, and I want to keep it that way. Having said that, whoever wins it, will deserve it."

The 14th and final round of the WRC gets underway on Thursday, November 22, from Cardiff City Hall.
