McRae pleased to make the points in new car

Alister McRae has sung the praises of Hyundai's new World Rally car, the Accent WRC2, after scoring his first point for the Korean marque by finishing in sixth place on the Rally of Portugal

McRae was in tenth place at the end of the first leg, but ran consistently in the top six yesterday (Saturday) and managed to move up to the number six slot overnight. With the first stage of the final leg cancelled, and team mate Kenneth Eriksson more than a minute behind, the Scot comfortably held on to take a single world championship point.

"I'm delighted to score my first points for Hyundai," said McRae. "If you'd told me before the rally that we'd get a point I'd have said no way."

The Portuguese Rally was the debut event for the MSD-built WRC2 and McRae believes the car, which has improved aerodynamics, suspension and engine, has real potential.

"I don't think the old car would have lasted this rally and I don't think the new car is quick enough just yet. But if it's as strong as that it gives us a good basis."

McRae now lies equal 10th in the drivers' championship, while Hyundai is up to third in the manufacturers' standings with eight points, 12 behind second-placed Ford.
