Makinen's surge on last leg

World Champion Tommi Makinen took this morning's first stage in the Catalunya Rally, but leader Philippe Bugalski still managed to increase his overall lead

Going into the third leg, Bugalski led the field by just under 18 seconds. The French driver has now added nearly two seconds on to his lead over second-placed Didier Auriol.

The only change in the overall top 10 positions sees Bruno Thiry overtake team-mate Juha Kankkunen for seventh place.

There are just four stages left of the Rally, so the world title hopefuls must pull something special out from the remainder of the day, or hope the surprise leader makes a mistake.
