Leg 1 update: Gronholm on top

World Rally Championship leader Marcus Gronholm has continued to dominate the Argentina Rally as the first leg of the event draws to a close

Following the cancellation of the first stage thanks to spectator overcrowding, Gronholm wasted no time putting his mark on the event. After just two stages he was 15 seconds clear of his closest challenger Tommi Makinen.

Gronholm survived a scare on one of his runs over the short super special course when he almost rolled after cutting a corner, and is now just over 17 seconds head of Makinen with two stages left to run today.

Richard Burns had a tricky start on SS2 when his Peugeot's engine dropped on to three cylinders following a water splash. But the reigning champion kept his composure and has just leapfrogged team-mate Harri Rovanpera for third.

Fellow Brit Colin McRae has a lot less to be happy about. The Ford star spun on SS3 and lost some time, but has been off the pace all day anyway on an event he won last year. The Scot is down in 11th, a minute and a half behind the leader, and will have to work hard over the next two days to score points.
