La Cumbre Service 3: Hyundais on fire
Colin McRae (Ford), leader: "I'm not going to relax; it's not a big enough gap for that. But today has been a lot better than we thought it would be."
"The power steering wasn't reacting in the last two stages (SS7 & SS8) and it was worse on seven because that was quite twisty."
"I'm more confident about finishing the rally after a full day's competition."
"We tried a softer tyre on the last three stages and it made the car a little more driveable. But it wasn't good on the last stage."
"I'm fighting the car. I have to turn twice in every corner. It doesn't feel the same as it did in testing."
"We've been trying to press all the buttons, but the handling just isn't right."
"Two kilometres after the start of stage eight we came to a hairpin. I pulled on the handbrake and the car just rolled."
Eriksson suffered a brake fluid leak on the final two stages of the day, which caused severe handling problems. The rear tail pipe then came off and his Hyundai Accent caught fire. At the end of the stage 1.5m flames were seen coming out of the back of the Swede's car. To compound matters for Hyundai, team mate Alister McRae befell the same problem. His rear tail pipe came off twice on SS8, setting the car on fire. The Scot lost seven minutes on the stage trying to repair his car.
