I must prove myself, says McRae Jr

Alister McRae has vowed to make the most of the biggest break of his career to date when he contests next year's World Rally Championship with Mitsubishi, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine

McRae, 30, will switch from Hyundai to Mitsubishi next year, replacing multiple World Champion Tommi Makinen, who is joining Subaru.

"It's up to me now to make the most of it," he said. "I have signed a two-year contract with equal number one status [with Francois Delecour]. To drive with Mitsubishi is a great opportunity.

"I wish I'd broken into the World Championship sooner, but you have to be patient. This time with Mitsubishi, I was in the right place at the right time."

Alister is three years younger than his ex-World Champion brother Colin, and is being tipped to challenge both his sibling and Richard Burns for the mantle of Britain's top rally driver next year.

"Alister treats Colin as any other driver, but if there is an opportunity to beat him, he will," said McRae Jr's new team boss at Mitsubishi, Andrew Cowan. "It doesn't matter to him if it's Colin or Tommi Makinen, they are all rivals."
