Gronholm surprised by early lead

Marcus Gronholm has admitted that he never expected to be in such a commanding position at the head of the Rally Italia so early in the event after his dominant run on the opening morning

The Ford driver managed to open up a 40-second advantage over nearest challengers, team-mate Mikko Hirvonen and Citroen's Sebastien Loeb, after setting the quickest time on the first three stages around Sardinia.

"I'm surprised to have such a large lead so early but the car feels great and I feel relaxed in the stages," said Gronholm, whose only worry of the morning was when he swiped a gatepost during the third stage.

"We worked hard during our tests here to make improvements to the suspension, differentials and engine and it's paid off. I feel more confident. The car is a little battered but I've pushed hard and hoped to avoid the rocks.

"BFGoodrich's tyres worked well and I will opt for a harder compound now as the temperatures rises. It will be hard as the roads will be rougher on the second pass and I won't be able to take the same time from Sebastien Loeb this afternoon."

Gronholm's teammate Hirvonen admitted that his decision to go for a harder compound tyre this morning probably played the key factor in the time difference to his team-mate.

"Second is good but I'm not so happy with my driving," he said. "I like the stages and I'm not taking stupid risks.

"There were many loose stones and the car's sump guard took a few big hits so I know I have to be careful. My tyre choice was too hard and that made the last two stages slippery."
