Grönholm set for Germany
Peugeot is supporting Germany's bid for a World Rally Championship round - and the French manufacturer is likely to send its reigning world title-holder Marcus Gronholm to the prospective event
The ADAC, German motorsport's governing body, is organising a three-day asphalt rally from July 6-8. Peugeot confirmed in Portugal today that it will send a 206 WRC, to be run by crack Italian squad Grifone and 'almost certainly' driven by Marcus Grönholm.
Peugeot Sport team boss Corrado Provera said: "There are a lot of discussions about Germany possibly getting a round of the world championship in 2002 and of course, we are highly interested. Our entry will help the organisers to test their new rallies, get publicity and allow us to build good experience. I would say it is 90 per cent certain that Marcus will drive the car."
The ADAC German Rally is essentially a blend of two other events - the Hunsruck, held on super-fast roads within a large military complex, and the Deutschland, which runs in more twisty, wine-growing terrain.
FIA Observers are expected to attend this year's rally, as Germany steps up its campaign to gain a round of the WRC. The move would be a popular one with manufacturers, who are keen to tap into one of Europe's largest car markets.
