Germany gets nod, waits for date

The Deutschland Rally is now a certainty to be included in the 2002 World Rally Championship - but its final slot will depend on where the German Grand Prix lies on the Formula 1 calendar

Organisers of the asphalt event, based close to Germany's border with France, want it to take place the weekend after the German GP. Normally, that would mean a slot for the rally on the first weekend of August, but sources say Hockenheim's F1 date could be switched to a mid-July slot.

A definitive F1 calendar should come out of October's FIA World Council, motorsport's decision-making body, and a firm WRC calendar could be put in place at the same time.

Despite Germany's inclusion, the WRC calendar is set to stay at its current 14 events. Several existing events had been mooted for exclusion, including Cyprus and the showpiece Safari, but it now appears that Portugal will be the rally removed from the schedule. The rally suffered badly from crowd congestion problems this year.
