Ford aims for top six

Ford heads into this weekend's season-opening Monte Carlo Rally aiming for top six finishes despite a driver line-up that lacks experience at the sharp end of the field. Both Toni Gardemeister and Roman Kresta are new to the team now that Markko Martin has left for Peugeot and Francois Duval has joined Citroen.

Despite seven years experience in the WRC, this is Gardemeister's first season with a WRC event-winning squad having driven for the factory Skoda team since 2002.

Although considered quick on gravel, this is the Finn's best opportunity to show what he can do in the Focus WRC - the most consistent asphalt performer in the field in 2004. But because of the Monte's unpredictable nature due to typically difficult weather conditions, Gardemeister has tended to shine on the event, with a best finish of fourth for SEAT in 2000.

"On rallies with difficult weather, I seem to get good results so I hope that will be the case here," said Gardemeister. "We can be sure that at some point we'll have tyres that are not perfect for the conditions. It's never nice to be on unsuitable tyres so it will be important to set my speed accordingly. To try to drive at 100 per cent when the tyres are not suited to the conditions can bring nasty surprises.

"Apart from Spain, these are my favourite asphalt stages and I'm looking forward to driving them in the Focus. I tested the car in Sweden last month and will test in France this weekend. It took me some time to settle into the Focus because it's different from what I've driven before.

"But it seems easy to drive and if we find a good set-up I think all will be fine. Realistically I want to finish in the top six, but I also have a hope it can be top three."

Kresta also drove a limited programme for Skoda last season and sees his switch to Ford as a chance to prove himself. "The Focus is very fast on asphalt and so this is a good rally to begin my Ford career," said the Czech driver. "The most important thing is to finish and gain as much experience of the car as I can. After that, my second target is a top six place. If I can achieve both of those I will be delighted."
