Favourites hit trouble

Wales Rally GB frontrunner Markko Martin and WRC title contender Carlos Sainz have both hit trouble on the first forest stage of the event this morning (Friday)

Sainz made a late start to SS2 in Brechfa, and is now running out of order. Amazingly, the reason for his belated start was because his in-car camera caught fire! "It caused a bit of panic," admitted Carlos.

Martin completed the stage in a cloud of smoke due to high gearbox oil pressure. After attempting a repair, he appears to have been forced out of the event despite being only 6.5secs off the lead.

Title contender Sebastien Loeb made a great start to his day, setting the fastest time to take the lead of the event. He leads Petter Solberg by 1.3secs, having outpaced the Subaru driver by 4.6secs in Brechfa.

Colin McRae also made a poor start to his last WRC start for the foreseeable future, saying: "The notes weren't working properly...nothing was working properly."

Rally Catalunya winner Gilles Panizzi also hit trouble when he suffered a front puncture on his Peugeot 206.
