Evans lauds MG despite smash
Rally stalwart Gwyndaf Evans has praised the new MG ZR Super 1600 rally car after its first outing on the Monte Carlo Rally, despite crashing out on the first Leg of the event
Evans came a cropper on SS3, the second running of the Selonnet-Turriers section, when his MG snapped sideways heavily damaging the rear of the car. The Welshman put the incident down to either gravel on the road or the fact that ice on the road had allowed the temperature of his Michelin tyres to drop.
"I'm disappointed that we didn't stay in the event longer," said Evans. "But there's no doubt that the car has got a lot of potential. We've got a lot of work to do, make no mistake, but the signs are there that the car can be very good."
Despite losing a wheel in the impact, the car stood up well, but the incident brought a premature end to the event for Evans. The ZR EX258's next WRC outing will be the Catalunya Rally in March.
"It looks a but like a pick-up truck behind the seats," added Evans. "You could say that it's only cosmetic, but it will take more than make up to put it right!"
