Burns calls for car safety review
Richard Burns believes that the World Rally Championship needs to look closely at car safety, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine
The Peugeot star spoke out following a spate of serious accidents during last weekend's Rally Australia, as a consequence of which two WRC crew members were hospitalised. The most serious accident left Daniel Grataloup, co-driver for Mitsubishi driver Francois Delecour, suffering from a suspected fractured skull, a broken leg and ribs, fractures to his pelvis, collarbone and ankle, a bruised lung and a punctured groin.
Burns, whose navigator Robert Reid was nursing sore ribs from a crash in pre-event testing, said: "I think we should be looking at what degree of protection there is around the roll cages and within the car."
"As it stands at the minute, we have only got a piece of very hard plastic around the cage and accidents like this make you realise the sort of injuries that are possible. I think it could be time for another overall look at safety in general."
