Auriol and Makinen lead Drivers Championship

Didier Auriol's third position in the Argentina Rally has left him joint leader in the World Rally Championship standings

He joins Mitsubishi's Tommi Makinen on 32 points, nine points clear of Toyota team-mate Carlos Sainz and Ford's Colin McRae.

Auriol is now looking ahead to the Acropolis Rally in less than two weeks with added confidence. He has never won there, but did finish second to McRae last year.

'I am very happy to be jointly leading the Championship at this point,' he said.

'Now we head to Greece, an event I really like, with the intention of actually overhauling Tommi.'

Makinen was happy with his overall position in spite of finishing fourth yesterday.

He said, 'It was not quite the result I wanted, but it is always good to finish and score World Championship points.

'We are still in a very good position in the championship.'
