Poland ruled out as season opener

World Rally Championship promoter Simon Long has scotched rumours that Rally Poland will kick-start next year's calendar

There had been speculation that - in the absence of the Monte Carlo Rally - there would be increased pressure for the WRC to find an event to run ahead of the French Alpine classic in January.

Poland was thought to be that event.

A source said: "There was a desire to be the first international championship off the mark next year - and Poland always stated that it could move from the summer to a winter date. A Rally Poland in January would mean an event similar in nature to Monte."

Long said that, if selected as the 14th round of the WRC, he expected the rally to remain in its summer slot.

"All events have a degree of flexibility about their dates and for them the number one priority is to find a slot on the calendar and then to find one that works," he said.

"I don't think we'll see Poland running in January to start the championship. Like I said, Poland has a strong rally which worked well in the calendar slot it ran in last year.

"And, let's not forget, we already have a very strong rally to start the season with in Sweden. Who can forget the winter wonderland we all arrived in this year, it was an exceptional way to start the season."
