Hirvonen set to enter Cambrian Rally

World Rally Championship stars Mikko Hirvonen and Sebastien Loeb are tipped to descend on Llandudno on October 17 for the final round of this year's BTRDA series, the Cambrian Rally

The North Wales event will present the opportunity for a last-minute test for the two World Rally Championship protagonists, who enter the final WRC round of the season separated by just one point.

The Rally GB starts just five days after the Cambrian Rally.

Ford team director Malcolm Wilson admitted an entry on the event is possible. He said: "It's something we are considering. We've looked into the possibility of entering Mikko. It's sensible, but we won't know any more until later this week."

Hirvonen, who leads Loeb after winning four WRC rounds this year, is also a former Cambrian Rally winner - taking his only win in Llandudno in 2002, while driving a private Subaru Impreza WRC.

While not a precise match for the Rally GB stages visited on the final round of the WRC, the roads in Penmachno and Clocaenog forests - used on the Cambrian Rally - offer similarities in the surface and some characteristics.

In addition to a possible Cambrian entry, Citroen is planning its usual pre-event test in Wales, while Ford will utilise its own facility in Greystoke forest, Cumbria.

In addition to a possible brace of factory Citroens and one works Focus RS WRC 09, Production Car WRC runners Eyvind Brynildsen (Skoda Fabia S2000), Nasser Al-Attiyah and Spyros Pavlides (both Subarus Impreza) are entered. Norwegian driver Mads Ostberg is another who will compete in his Impreza WRC.

The Cambrian Rally used to be a regular pre-RAC Rally test session for many of the factory or semi-works cars. In 1988, double British champion David Llewellin drove a Ford Sierra Cosworth on the event for the first time ahead of his RAC entry of that year.
