Matthew Wilson says he will take different approach in Rally GB return
Matthew Wilson says he will take a different approach to the sport when he returns to Rally GB this week, ending an eight-month absence from the World Rally Championship
A broken ankle and subsequent funding problems have combined to keep the Cumbrian out of the series since tackling Monte Carlo Rally in January, but he says his time away has made him take a different view of things.
"It's very, very good to be back," said Wilson after posting ninth fastest time at this afternoon's qualifying stage. "While I've been away I've been looking at videos of the way we're driving and various other things in the sport and we've changed our approach.
"In terms of driving style, I was much too sideways before. OK, it looked spectacular, but it wasn't the fastest way by any means, so I've worked on that. When I was competing full time I never had the time to really look at this kind of thing, it was just rally, rally, rally."
Wilson admitted it had also taken some time to get back up to speed with the WRC.
"When you've been away from the sport for a while, it does take time to get right back up there," he added. "But I'm pretty pleased with the time we did in qualifying and now we just have to get out and see what we can do on the event itself. The main thing is that I'm here, thanks to a lot of support from companies in Cumbria."
