Hour 24: Historic third win for Audi crew

Frank Biela, Tom Kristensen and Emmanuel Pirro have gone into the record books as the first drivers to win three successive Le Mans 24 Hour races with the same team. The number one Audi squad duly completed the victory it threatened since taking the lead on Saturday evening, heading a formation one-two-three finish for the German marque

There were no late-race heroics by Johnny Herbert, who held station in second place, ensuring that the silver R8s took the flag side-by-side. The number three machine was sprinted through the final lap and all three Audis crossed the line together.

"To win it once was great. The second time was fantastic, but to be a three time winner is just unbelievable," said Frank Biela. "If you had said to me yesterday morning that I was going to win I wouldn't have believed you."

The sole Bentley made it home in fourth ahead of the ORECAs, who took fifth and sixth; the number 15 car finishing ahead of the 14 machine.

There was late-race heartbreak in the LMP675 class. The leading WR-Peugeot suffered a puncture and sustained suspension damage with just minutes remaining. Stephane Daoudi managed to get the car back to the pits where it was repaired and it was sent back out still in the class lead. But the car was not completely fixed and the Reynard-VW was able to move by to take a most unlikely victory.

There were no such dramas for the GTS leaders and the Corvette of Fellows/O'Connell/Gavin took a comfortable win. The GT battle was much closer, but the in the end The Racers' Group number 81 Porsche prevailed.
