Audi not perfect shock

Audi may have taken three of the top four provisional grid slots during the first night of qualifying at Le Mans, but it was not all smooth running for the mighty German manufacturer

Marco Werner, a new boy in the hot favourite's squad, beached the number three R8 at the Ford chicane, while Christian Pescatori burnt out the clutch on the pace-setting number two car.

But the biggest blip on Audi's preparations for the race came from four-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Yannick Dalmas. The Frenchman crashed the Japanese Team Goh R8 at one of the chicanes on the Mulsanne straight. The car will be ready to lap again tonight in the final pair of qualifying sessions.

"I was quite happy with the car until I spun near the end of the qualifying session which surprised me," said Dalmas. "I'm confident we can improve tomorrow and make sure of a good position on the starting grid for the race."

The Goh Audi was 11th fastest last night.
