This is working out nicely for Alonso though, the long slow zone is helping him stay 1m24s clear of Lopez with the clock ticking down.
It's been a bit stop-start in the last hour, but at least it's helped Team Autosport make its "driver changes" and keep you all in the loop.
Driver change for the GTE Pro-leading #92. Christensen out, Vanthoor in.
By our admittedly rough workings out, Stevens went into the pits around 10:11am local time, so he's coming up to 20 minutes stationary now. From second, he's now dropped all the way to seventh, although the car currently behind him on the leaderboard is the crashed #22 Ligier of Paul di Resta, so he's unlikely to fall back any further for the time being.
United Autosports says that di Resta has been to the medical centre and is "fine".
Bruni has edged away a little in the battle for second in GTE Pro - crossing the line for the 275th time, the #91 Porsche has 1.9s in hand over Dirk Muller's #68 Ford.
Garcia has pitted the sole remaining #63 Corvette, handing back to Jan Magnussen.
Since the safety car period, Alonso's lead gap has stabilised at around the 1m30s mark.
Paul-Loup Chatin must be counting his lucky stars. Having dropped to fifth after the previous safety car, he's seen Di Resta and Stevens fall by the wayside, promoting the #48 IDEC car back to third. He's 1m30 behind Thiriet, who seems eminently catchable....
The #23 Panis-Barthez Ligier is still in the pits - Will Stevens had almost a full lap in hand over Pierre Thiriet when he came in, but that advantage has now gone.
So we're back under racing conditions, but with the slow zone at the Porsche Curves still in place.
This latest caution has not helped the #67 Ford in its GTE Pro battle. Priaulx is a safety car behind Bruni and Muller, who are nose to tail.
And it's coming in this lap, so the slow zone is imminent.
A slow zone will replace the safety car in order to make the restart smoother, race control confirms.

No indication as to when the safety car period will end just yet.
Corvette has confirmed that the #64 car is out of the race with terminal engine issues. That's the third retirement of the race in GTE Pro, after the #94 Porsche and the #82 BMW.
Stevens comes in on the next tour - his 292nd - but it looks like a bit more than a regular stop. The Ligier has been wheeled back into the garage and has the engine cover off.
Aston Martin reports the #97 car is due out again shortly. It's 14 laps down on the class lead.
This safety car is playing into Alonso's hands, he's almost 3m up the road now.
The third-placed Signatech Alpine of Thiriet also took a pitstop, but second-placed man Will Stevens stays out in the #23 Panis-Barthez Ligier.
The crane's collected di Resta's car and the G-Drive Racing ORECA of Vergne took the chance to pit from the class lead.
Di Resta's out of the car, but it isn't going anywhere under its own power.
The #22 United Autosports Ligier is the cause, having hit the wall through Porsche Curves.

Paul di Resta was at the wheel and the front of the car is destroyed with debris spread across the track.
A good sign of how topsy-turvy Le Mans can be and how much wear and tear plays a part: Mikhail Aleshin has the #11 SMP Racing BR1 in 48th overall and fifth in class.

Early in the night running, that car was lapping at the back of the field with top five hopes looking remote.
Ricci's Ligier has been dug out of the gravel and is heading slowly back to the pits with a right-rear puncture. It's not obvious, but one suspects that it was the effect, rather than the cause of his spin.
Alonso has a 1m16s lead over Lopez - with the slow zones still active for the #50 car.
Straightforward stop for Senna, who's 35s adrift of Beche in fourth.
Porsche's retro liveries have done the job so far in this race, sitting 1-2 in GTE Pro

Senna pits the Rebellion R-13 from third overall, he had around an 18s gap to Beche in the sister car behind.
G-Drive continues to control the battle in LMP2, to the point that it's not really been a battle so far!

Tincknell pits the #67 Ford from fourth in class, but that safety car has given him enough of a buffer to maintain the place over Garcia and Brisoce behind. Andy Priaulx takes over.
Let's have an order recap with a little over 5 hours to go, starting with the overall leaders

So Alonso's lead is now 1m15s - he benefited a bit from Lopez getting caught in the slow zone on his way out of the pits.
The #64 Corvette has been retired with a blown head gasket.
No sooner had we got going again than we've got a car off in the gravel at the Porsche Curves - it's the #50 Larbre Ligier with Romano Ricci at the wheel, which was all the way down in 30th place overall.
