Will Davison fends off Craig Lowndes for Phillip Island V8 Supercars race two win
Will Davison resisted a flying Craig Lowndes to win the second V8 Supercars race at Phillip Island and move into the championship lead
Polesitter Lowndes stalled his Triple Eight Holden at the start and tumbled to ninth, then began a comeback charge that almost took him to victory in the 45-lap race, which saw four safety car interruptions.
Going into the final lap, Lowndes finally had long-time leader Davison (Ford Performance Racing) in sight, but Davison had enough to hand to hold his rival at bay and win by half a second.
A handful of drivers chose to conserve fuel and do the race on one rather than the more popular two pitstops, and best of these was Jason Bright, who held on for third in the Brad Jones Holden.
Bright was passed for second by Lowndes late on, but then had some breathing space as a pack behind battled hard for fourth. Stone Brothers' Shane van Gisbergen won this fight, ahead of erstwhile championship leader Jamie Whincup in the second Triple Eight car, FPR's Mark Winterbottom (who was delayed in the pits) and Tekno driver Jonathon Webb.
Front-row starter David Reynolds was not so rapid in the race and could only finish eighth in his Rod Nash/FPR Ford, followed by van Gisbergen's one-stopping team-mate Lee Holdsworth and Holden Racing Team's Garth Tander.
