One-Two for JB Giesse
Emmanuel Collard and Vincenzo Sospiri won the second round of the International Sports Racing Series today to maintain their 100 per cent record
Winning by a margin of 1:09.813 at Monza, the JB Giesse Ferrari 333SP duo was followed home by the team's second Ferrari, driven by Mauro Baldi and Laurent Redon.
Third and fourth places also went to Ferrari 333 SP cars, with the Calderari/Bryner car ahead of Dutch National Racing's Waaijenberg and Van der Lof.
Such a comfortable repeat of the JB Giesse's first round victory had not seemed likely in the early stages when the DAMS Lola Judd, driven by the French trio of Gounon, Bernard and Tinseau, led from pole and looked to be in command of the race.
However, exhaust problems overtook the brand new car, which dropped back before eventually retiring 12 laps from the end of the race.
Gounon had said earlier he thought a first win was unlikely, as the car was simply too new and untested. However, with pole position and fastest practice times, it remains a very successful debut.
The non-Ferrari cars did not fare so well, with the Repsol Kremer K8 Porsche retiring 11 laps from the end, having run as high as third.
Philippe Gache's Ford-powered Riley and Scott, hopefully running for the last time before changing to more powerful engines, could only complete 10 laps.
With 13 cars out of the field of 24 retiring, the SR2 class cars finished well, with two Tampolli RS2 cars taking fifth and sixth places overall, ahead of the BPR Kremer Porsche - the only non-Ferrari SR1 car to finish.
Collard and Sospiri now lead the championship with 40 points, a 13-point lead over their team-mates Baldi and Redon. Calderari and Bryner are third with 20 points. The next round is at Spa Francorchamps, on the 23rd May.
