Roger Etcell Q&A
It's been a month since the announcement of the SCV8 Supercar Championship and things are taking off for the embryonic series. Two manufacturers, Jaguar and Peugeot, are already on-side and countless teams and drivers showing interest and the presentation to potential entrants less than a week away. Roger Etcell, a director on the board of Supercar Promotions Ltd and former PowerTour supremo, the company behind the venture, believes that three more car makers are close to blessing the silhouette series with their model's body-shapes and the target of 20 cars for next year's grid is well within sight. He took time out to talk to autosport.com to report on how things are taking shape.
"We've had a huge positive response from within the industry and from the British fans. We're encouraged by the numbers and calibre of companies and individuals who are approaching us to discuss all aspects of the championship."
Not at all. This is quite normal and in fact we were very pleased with the outcome of their recent meeting and we are happy that we can provide the additional details requested well within the deadline set.
Quick! We didn't think we would have two manufacturers agreeing for their car brands to be used in the series so soon after the launch and felt that this would have been achieved after a few months, not within one month. Needless to say, this is good news for us, and puts us ahead of target dates for the grid to be confirmed.
We are targeting race-engineering teams not manufacturers, to enter the series, as this is a non-development formula of motor racing.
The only request that we are making to manufacturers at this time, is for permission for teams to use their car brands in the championship. We're not asking for any financial contributions or practical assistance. However, if a marque wishes to take the opportunity of SCV8 to use within a strategic marketing initiative, of course we're interested in working with that manufacturer and brand. I think Jaguar and Peugeot have already recognised the added value that SCV8 will bring, without any diversification and without any distraction from their own motorsport programmes.
Like anything new it takes time for all to see the positive side. We know that not everyone will see the positives of a new championship coming into the marketplace at this time and some may initially see it as a dilution for the sport, we're very aware of this but believe we have a product that is needed to bring back the missing wow factor in British motorsport and are keen to create opportunities for drivers and teams needing new opportunities and revenue streams to be accommodated.
We see the SCV8 series sitting alongside the current offering, both complementing other championships and offering teams an additional racing opportunity. Teams can run in the SCV8 championship as well as another series that is on the same 'bill' - it's certainly something that is a real potential option. We'll be part of British motorsport, providing additional crowd-pleasing, wheel-to-wheel track action. And after all, this industry aims to deliver one of the most exciting spectator sports on offer, so if we can enhance the quality and breadth of racing, it'll be good for everyone.
We're hosting a presentation for teams and drivers next week when we will unveil the SCV8 Jaguar X-type. Following this, we'll be getting the car out on track and interested parties will have a chance to experience all the qualities of this 'supercar'. Meanwhile, we're continuing to talk to various manufacturers and other interested parties as we progress forward and the different elements fall into place.
Of course, it's not all plain sailing and like any other new start-up, there are plenty of challenges now and, I'm sure, ahead of us. But, the level of support and encouragement we've been shown, has given us the confidence to know that we are bringing a new series which can add to the current motorsport scene, with the type of car that drivers want to drive and spectators want to watch.
