PowerTour night race finale back on

The PowerTour package season-finale night race at Silverstone has been reinstated after the event was cancelled at the end of last month

PowerTour night race finale back on

The race, which is due to take place on September 29, was ditched in favour of a daytime format, but PowerTour organiser, British Motorsport Promoters, has decided the floodlit race will go ahead after all.

"I am very pleased to confirm that we have been able to reinstate the night race," said BMP chairman Rob Fearnall.

The double-header round of the British Formula 3 Championship will take place as usual, but the season-closing second race will be extended to 30 laps from 15.

The F3 races will take place during the afternoon while the British GT race will run in the evening.

Other changes to the package include the addition of a 15-minute warm-up session to the Sunday morning schedule for the GT series. All races, except the GT event, will also be run over a specific number of laps rather than time limits, which have been in force so far this year. Both changes take effect immediately.

"We have listened to the needs of the GT teams," said Fearnall, "and are pleased to introduce a warm-up session from the next round at Brands Hatch onwards."

The future of the PowerTour is still in doubt as the package is due to be reviewed for next year, but Fearnall said BMP would ensure the stability of all the series.

"We have met regularly with the championship co-ordinators over recent weeks," said Fearnall. "Most of the other elements of the British F3 and British GT meetings will remain in place and we are pleased to reassure teams and drivers that BMP remains committed to these championships."
