Stewart wins Bud Shoot-out

Tony Stewart scored his second consecutive victory today (Sunday) at Daytona's annual NASCAR season opener, the Budweiser Shoot-out.

The Pontiac star held off Dale Earnhardt Jr and reigning Winston Cup title holder Jeff Gordon at the end of the 70-lap race.

The key moment of the race - run only for 2001 NASCAR pole and former Bud Shoot-out winners - came with 24 laps to run. Ken Schrader had taken the lead from Rusty Wallace, but Stewart saw his chance to hit the front. He took his Pontiac down to the low line, with Earnhardt Jr electing to follow him in favour of Schrader. The pair drafted by, leaving Stewart with a battle on his hands to the chequered flag.

But he held on to the end, despite great pressure from Earnhardt Jr, Gordon and Schrader. The quartet were separated by just 0.4s at the finish.

Wallace had attempted to make an advantage at the single pit-stop by only taking on two tyres. Initially he built up a three second lead, but his gamble failed and the pack were able to close him down. He eventually came home 11th.
