Stewart lands $10,000 fine
Tony Stewart has been slapped with a $10,000 fine and placed on probation to the end of the NASCAR Winston Cup season for punching a photographer following last weekend's Brickyard 400
The Pontiac ace turned on freelance photographer Gary Mook after a disappointing race in which he only finished 12th despite starting from pole position.
NASCAR has also demanded a formal apology from Stewart to Mook.
Stewart has already expressed his regret over the incident. He told AP: "There's no excuse for what I did. It was wrong. I don't expect anybody to forgive me, what I did was wrong.
"I think what NASCAR fined me was not enough, given my past."
Stewart has a reputation for a fiery character and has been involved in clashes with the media before, notably at Richmond in September 2000 and at Daytona in July 2001.
NASCAR executive Mike Helton said: "It is imperative that we protect the integrity of our sport. This type of behaviour cannot be tolerated and is in no way indicative of the manner in which our drivers, teams, tracks and sponsors interact with the media."
