Rudd fights a losing title battle
Even though he gained 54 points on Jeff Gordon in the battle for the Winston Cup title, Ricky Rudd's bid for the 2001 championship is virtually over
All Gordon has to do to clinch the championship is gain 44 points on Rudd in next Sunday's Pennzoil 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway or finished 28th or higher in the final three races of the season to win his fourth Winston Cup title.
Rudd finished eighth and Gordon was 25th on Sunday.
"That turned out a lot better than it started," said Rudd of Sunday's race. "We were about the worst car here at the start and we came to find out we had a tyre slowly going down. We made quite a few changes and the car got pretty good. I'm not sure what happened on the pit stops that put us down a lap.
"I would have liked to have seen a caution late in the race. We raced past the leader with six laps to go and finished on the lead lap," he added.
