Rookie Gilliland takes Talladega pole

Rookie David Gilliland has taken his maiden Nextel Cup pole for Sunday's UAW-Ford 500 at Talladega Superspeedway

Gilliland leads an all-Ford front row with veteran Dale Jarrett starting alongside him, Gilliland's pole making it the third time in a row the number 38 car has started on pole at Talladega.

Gilliland's pole effort was slower than most drivers went in practice after NASCAR reduced the size of restrictor plates after a recently repaved Talladega sent speeds soaring.

Hendrick drivers are the best-placed drivers competing for the championship, with Jimmie Johnson third, Jeff Gordon fourth and Kyle Busch sixth.

At the other end of the field are Dale Earnhardt Jr in 33rd and points leader Jeff Burton in 34th.
