Richmond: Stewart comes from behind

Tony Stewart came from 41st on the grid to score his second NASCAR Winston Cup victory of the season at Richmond on Sunday.

The race was run in two parts as rain forced a stoppage on Saturday night. Stewart was forced to start his Pontiac from the back thanks to an engine change after qualifying. He took the lead from rookie Ryan Newman on lap 373 of 400 shortly after a restart.

Pole position man Ward Burton led early on but was forced out with transmission problems. Ricky Rudd had passed him for the lead, but he crashed out as he tried to drive round Rusty Wallace's car which was slowing with a flat tyre.

Jimmy Spencer also crashed out of the lead when Jimmie Johnson made a mistake through Turns 3 and 4, knocking them both out.

Newman finished second ahead of Jeff Burton, Mark Martin and Jeremy Mayfield. Matt Kenseth did a brilliant job to take sixth after the team made major corrections to his car on Sunday morning that cost him two laps. He moves to second in the points standings behind Sterling Marlin, who finished 11th.

The drivers were highly critical of the track surface at Richmond after the 'sealer' top layer of tarmac became sticky and came up. "I love the people at Richmond and the raceway, but they gave us the worst Winston Cup race track I've ever seen in my life," said Stewart.
