Race: Gordon holds on for win

Jeff Gordon took a record-setting seventh road course win at Watkins Glen on Sunday by taking the lead with just 12 laps to go and surviving two late restarts to stay ahead of Jeff Burton in second place

Gordon's victory is his second in consecutive weekends after the NASCAR Winston Cup Championship leader won the Brickyard 400 last Sunday.

Oil on the Watkins Glen track caused two late yellow flags with just seven and four laps to go. Despite constant pressure from Burton, Gordon managed to keep his Hendrick Motorsport Chevrolet ahead for his fifth win of the season.

Jeremy Mayfield took the final podium place in third, just ahead of Ricky Rudd. Todd Bodine finished in fifth with Gordon's Hendrick team mate Jerry Nadeau rounding out the top six.

After promising much, Mayfield's Penske South Racing team mate Rusty Wallace had a very disappointing day. Wallace has six career road wins to his name and was hoping to take the record today (Sunday) and make amends for finishing last here in 2000. But engine trouble intervened and the Winston Cup veteran found himself last once again.

"I'll tell you - it's tough," said Wallace, who has won at Watkins Glen twice before. "The car was running strong, but we just keeping having these stupid problems. And, today we had another stupid one."

Pole man Dale Jarrett also had a bad day and after starting from the front, the Robert Yates Racing ace could not keep his Ford out of the Turn 1 gravel trap and wound up 31st and a lap down by the finish.

Gordon's championship lead now stands at a sizeable 194 points from second-placed man Ricky Rudd. The Winston Cup heads to Michigan International Speedway next weekend for the Pepsi 400.
