Race: Bobby Labonte wins

Former NASCAR champion Bobby Labonte claimed victory in the Virginia 500 Winston Cup race at Martinsville following a sprint from a late caution period

The Pontiac driver, who had only started 15th on the grid, headed Dale Jarrett, Matt Kenseth and Tony Stewart when the action was restarted with seven laps to go. When the race went green, Labonte made his break as Jarrett and Kenseth were embroiled in battle.

The victory was secured with two laps to go when Bobby Hamilton spun out, leaving the race to end under caution. "We had a good car in practice yesterday, we just didn't qualify very well," Labonte said. "These guys did a great job in the pits today and we made some adjustments. We kept working on it a little bit in the race and got track position. We went with two tyres twice and then none at the end there."

Kenseth won the battle for second, while Jarrett lost third to Stewart. The result moves Kenseth into striking distance of Stirlin Marlin's Winston Cup points lead. "To be honest, I didn't think we had a second place car," he said happily.

Dale Earnhardt Jr and Terry Labonte completed the top six.
