Qualifying: Newman grabs pole

Ryan Newman blitzed the NASCAR pack to set the time which will put him on pole for Sunday's New Hampshire 300. Newman clipped fractions off Rusty Wallace's record to leave the mark at 28.802sec and take his third pole position of the season

"The car was good from the moment we unloaded it out of the truck," said Ford driver Newman, "and it just kept getting faster and faster. It was just a good qualifying lap."

Johnny Benson ran Newman closest to pip Bobby Labonte to the second quickest time in his Pontiac. Labonte's effort was an impressive one, in a Pontiac he'd wrecked just last weekend in a clash with Benson at Richmond.

Fourth in the line-up on Sunday will be Busch series points leader Greg Biffle - subbing again for the injured Bobby Hamilton in the best of the Chevys, while Mike Skinner beat the pain barrier to take the fifth best time. Skinner had suffered first and second degree burns and a knee injury on Wednesday in a testing crash at Kansas.

Sterling Marlin, who heads the Winston Cup points standings, will start his Dodge in 24th place.
