Qual: Michigan wash-out

Qualifying for Sunday's Nextel Cup GFS Marketplace 400 at Michigan International Speedway was cancelled following persistent rain on Friday afternoon

Qual: Michigan wash-out

It is the second qualifying session in succession that has been cancelled due to the rain this season with rain forcing last weekend's session at Watkins Glen to revert to a points and criteria grid.

The rain was costly to several teams which did not meet criteria - Kevn Lepage, Kerry Earnhardt, Kyle Busch, Kenny Wallace, J.J. Yeley, Mike Wallace, Stanton Barrett and Stan Boyd could not make the cut.

Teams were able to practice in the morning. Jeremy Mayfield was by far the fastest in qualifying shape, making a fast lap in 37.352sec (192.761mph) while running just three laps. Rusty Wallace was three-tenths slower at 37.671, with several drivers grouped under 37.7, those being Elliott Sadler, Kurt Busch, Greg Biffle, Brian Vickers, Kasey Kahne and Bobby Labonte. Johnson was 18th on the sheet and Gordon 10th.

Johnson will try to bounce back from two straight breakdowns, with engine failures at Indianapolis and Watkins Glen.

Jimmie Johnson, No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet
