Nemechek wins Bud Pole

Joe Nemechek claimed his first Bud Pole of the season at the Talladega Superspeedway today (Friday), ahead of Sunday's race, the Winston 500

The 37-year-old completed the 2.66 mile Alabama oval in 50.326s, just 0.034s ahead of second-placed man Bill Elliot.

Dale Earnhardt Jr was third fastest, with Jerry Nadeau and Tony Stewart rounding off the top five. Championship leader Bobby Labonte was sixth fastest.

Jeff Burton, currently second in the standings, failed to post a time in the top 25 and will compete in the second round of qualifying tomorrow.
