Nemechek on pole at Martinsville
Joe Nemechek has taken pole for Sunday's Winston Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway.
The Chevrolet driver, who won his first Winston Cup series race at New Hampshire two weeks ago, recorded a lap time of 0.19.886 - not the fastest lap around Martinsville, but good enough for pole.
'I just had a perfect lap,' said Nemechek. 'You know most people were going faster on their first timed lap.
'My first timed lap didn't feel as good, but my second one was perfect.'
Nemechek heads the top five of Ted Musgrave, Geoffrey Bodine, Kyle Petty, Jeff Gordon.
Musgrave, driving a Ford, snatched his first top ten starting position of 1999, putting in a 95.070mph lap.
'To tell the truth, it kind of surprised me a bit,' Musgrave revealed. 'Here, at Martinsville, sometimes the harder you try the worse you get.'
Gordon, who starts in fifth, is driving for the first time without crew chief Ray Evernham, who left earlier this week to set his own outfit.
