NASCAR matches wins record

As Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the chequered flag in the last round of the NASCAR Winston Cup at Texas, NASCAR found itself equalling a record set back in 1991

The first seven races of the series have had seven different winners - an occurrence that last took place eight years ago.

Amazingly, this is not the only NASCAR record that has been equalled or broken already in the fledgling 2000 season.

Dale Earnhardt took victory in the Winston Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway earlier this year, scraping ahead of Bobby Labonte by 0.010 seconds, which represented the closest winning margin since 1993.

In addition, the season has broken the record for the number of drivers to lead a race by this stage in the season. A remarkable 32 drivers have headed the field at some point during the first seven races, a mixture of veterans and new drivers including two generations of Dale Earnhardts.

The next round of the Winston Cup will be at Martinsville on April 9th.
