Interloper Said takes Mexico pole

Sportscar star Boris Said outshone the NASCAR Busch Series regulars in qualifying for the Telcel-Motorola 200 at Mexico City, taking pole position

Said has a reputation as a road course ace and is regularly drafted in by NASCAR teams for such events, but two drivers far more at home on ovals ran him close for pole in Mexico. Denny Hamlin and Johnny Sauter will start second and third, both within a tenth of a second of Said.

A host of road racing specialists complete the top six. Former Champ Car and IndyCar star Adrian Fernandez thrilled his home fans with fourth place, ahead of fellow local (and 2005 Mexico City pole winner) Jorge Goeters. Belgian sportscar ace and long-time Formula 3000 driver Marc Goossens was sixth quickest.

Other open wheel converts fared less well. Ex-Champ Car driver Michel Jourdain Jr suffered leg injuries prior to the event when he slipped off a horse at a pre-race photocall. He qualified 14th, nine places ahead of 2003 Champ Car title winner Paul Tracy, who will start 23rd for his second Busch race.

Points leader Kevin Harvick qualified 11th, three places behind his nearest rival J.J. Yelley.
