Gordon lucks out in Shoot-out draw
Reigning NASCAR Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon drew the shortest straw and will start his season at the back of the grid for this weekend's non-championship Bud Shoot-out at Daytona
The starting grid was drawn for this weekend's non-points event, with positions chosen at random among those drivers that won poles during the 2001 season, along with former winners of the event and series champions.
Pole position for the event was drawn by Roush Racing's Kurt Busch, who earned his berth by way of winning the Darlington pole, while Kenny Wallace will start outside of the front row. Wallace, who is still in the number one DEI Pennzoil Chevrolet of Steve Park, won the fall Rockingham pole to make his start.
Meanwhile, Gordon will start shotgun in the 22-car field, running alongside Todd Bodine in the 11th row. Tony Stewart and Ken Schrader make up the second row for Sunday's 70-lap event, with Bill Elliott and Ricky Rudd in the third row.
The race's format will be the same as a year ago, with a green flag pit stop mandated at any point in the 70-lap distance, and teams can pit under caution as often as they like. The 22 car-field for the Shoot-out is an event record.
