Gordon guns for Phoenix glory
Points leader Jeff Gordon says he's not going to play the percentages at Phoenix this weekend in his quest for the NASCAR Winston Cup
The stock car ace is just five races away from his fourth Winston Cup crown, and he holds a commanding 395-point lead over nearest rival Ricky Rudd.
"We're not worried about finishing in a certain position during these last few races to guarantee the championship," said Gordon. "We're trying to win each race. If we can't win, we want to finish as high as possible. We're not going to change our gameplan around this late in the season."
Gordon only needs to finish 18th or better in the remaining races to win the title, but wants to add a Winston Cup victory at Phoenix to his resume. He has won at 19 of the 23 tracks currently on the schedule.
"We really want to win this race," he added. "We've raced here since 1993 and haven't won in a Cup car. I've won a Busch race, but this team really wants to win a Cup race here."
