Edwards desperate to win Cup title
Carl Edwards says he is desperate to beat Jimmie Johnson to the Sprint Cup title this year after losing out to the triple champion in the final races of last season's Chase
Edwards won nine races and was leading the standings two races into the Chase in 2008, but his title charge was ruined when he caused a six-car accident with 17 laps to go at Talladega in October and he could only fight back to second in the championship.
He admitted that he badly wants to beat Johnson and says he's more interested in taking the title than winning races along the way.
"What Jimmie has done in the past three years is really special," Edwards told autosport.com. "But man, if it comes down to him and me again I want to beat him really badly. I want to win that championship, I want to know what it feels like.
"Even winning nine races and having a great year and all that, that's fine. But you know, I'd take a championship with no wins, rather than a nine-win season, just because I really want to accomplish that goal."
Edwards will start today's season-opening Daytona 500 from 16th place after finishing eighth in his Duel race on Thursday.
