Dale Earnhardt Jr was the winner in the NASCAR race at Phoenix today (Sunday). The triumph was his first non restrictor-plate race victory in more than two years. Earnhardt headed home Jimmie Johnson whilst points leader Matt Kenseth came home sixth after starting 37th
Chevrolet driver Earnhardt dominated the final laps around the one-mile oval to take a comfortable win, and in so doing also moved into second place in the points standings. Kenseth didn't take the chance to wrap up the title today, but his championship still looks like a formality.
Earnhardt battled with Johnson throughout the final third of the race, finally getting in front on lap 263 of 312. He stuck in front to the end in spite of three late caution flags. Polesitter Ryan Newman came in third ahead of Kurt Busch, who led the most laps on the day.
With two events left, Kenseth's lead over Earnhardt is 228 points. Kenseth needs only to average 30th place over the remaining races to ensure the championship.
