Crew chief fined

NASCAR has fined crew chief Tommy Baldwin $10,000 for his part in a pitlane scuffle between members of the Evernham Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing teams and officials at Chicagoland last weekend

The problems started when Baldwin remonstrated with Tony Stewart's crew chief after an on-track shunt between Stewart and Evernham driver Kasey Kahne.

Baldwin was relieved of $5,000 for breaking a rule prohibiting altercations in another team's pit area and a further $5,000 for not controlling other team members. He was also placed on probation until Dec. 31.

Only Baldwin was penalized by NASCAR. His team owner Ray Evernham had been vocal in demands that Stewart be suspended, but now seems to have accepted the official decision.

"NASCAR has made its decision; now it's time to move on," Evernham said in a statement. "I understand why Tommy and the team reacted the way they did in the heat of competition.

"NASCAR has rules. I agree with rules. Evernham Motorsports also has rules. NASCAR has made its decision and imposed its penalties. Now, I will impose the appropriate penalties for Evernham Motorsports."
