Charlotte: Shock win for Martin
Mark Martin ended a 73-race losing streak by taking victory in the Charlotte 600 NASCAR Winston Cup round on Sunday
It was the 33rd career win for the Roush Ford ace, who last won at Martinsville in April 2000.
Martin charged through heavy traffic towards the end to beat team-mate Matt Kenseth to continue what is proving to be a great season for Roush after a difficult 2001.
"This is a good year for us," said Martin. "We're top five in the points, and if we can start racing like this week-in and week-out, if we can keep picking it up and having good luck, we could even contend for the championship."
Jimmie Johnson led the first 500 miles before it all went wrong for the rookie. First, he rammed Hut Stricklin as he came up to lap him, sending the Dodge spinning to bring out the yellows. Then he came in for fuel and skidded through his pit box. The delay cost him nine places, but he eventually finished seventh.
That left Martin with a two second lead from Kenseth, which he defended to the flag. His car was found to be an eighth of an inch too low in scrutineering, but it will not affect the result. The team is likely to be fined, however.
Robby Gordon, who finished eighth in the Indianapolis 500 earlier in the day, started from the back of the NASCAR race. He finished 16th, completing a total of 1098.5 racing miles for the whole day.
