Dolby plays down troubled practice

Tottenham's Craig Dolby is feeling confident ahead of qualifying for this weekend's Superleague Formula races at Adria, despite two difficult practice sessions for the title-chasing team so far

Having missed this morning's session completely due to an engine management issue, Dolby finished the second practice in only 13th place after struggling to match pacesetter, Davide Rigon (Anderlecht).

The Briton was confident, however, that problems this morning did not necessarily mean tough times ahead in qualifying.

"You have to push beyond the limits in practice to find where the limit is," he said. "We just have to put a lap together, and we're there or thereabouts. Just tweak the car a bit from free practice and we'll be on it."

Tottenham Hotspur is currently second in the Superleague standings, just two points behind leader AC Milan.

Fellow ADR-run driver John Martin finished the session only four places ahead of Dolby in 10th for Beijing Guoan after setting the pace early on this morning. With no previous race experience of the Adria Raceway, both drivers felt efforts were best spent finding a set-up appropriate for the circuit's tight and twisty layout.

"We've just gone a different way to everyone else," Dolby said. "Everyone else has put fresh tyres on. We've just worked on the car consistently. Anyone can find a second when you put a new set of tyres on, so we'd rather find the time before we put the new tyres on and find even more when we do.

"I think this qualifying session is going to be good. A lot of people use very good and new tyres, and because of how well we've done this year we haven't got any good or new tyres until qualifying so we'll see what happens. I never give up - bring qualifying on!"
