Stoneman takes maiden F2 pole

Dean Stoneman clinched his maiden Formula 2 pole position on the streets of Marrakech on Friday

He had set the pace in the final practice session earlier today and continued that form into qualifying, ultimately finishing three tenths clear of his nearest rival.

But far from being dominated, it was a session where times tumbled throughhout with the top spot changing several times.

Mihai Marinescu, Will Bratt, Sergei Afanasiev and Armaan Ebrahim each had a turn at the top before Stoneman unleashed a 1m32.8s lap early on his second set of tyres. He improved that to a 32.5s two laps later and that time stood untouched in the last five minutes as his rivals squabbled behind.

Jolyon Palmer and Jack Clarke finished second and third, and Bratt jumped back up to fourth with the final quick lap of the session.

They pushed Johan Jokinen and Nicola de Marco down to row three, after both had sprung from nowhere to snatch second, one after another, just moments earlier.

Philipp Eng and Armaan Ebrahim will share the fourth row for tomorrow's first race. Afanasiev and Marinescu ended up 10th and 12th on the grid, despite holding the top spot earlier in the session.

Kazim Vasiliauskas did not appear in the session following a big accident in the day's earlier practice session.

*Will Bratt's initial fastest laptime was disallowed because he did not cross the line in time to start the lap at the end of the session, so he drops from fourth to seventh on the grid.
