Vergne to contest FR3.5 alongside F3
Jean-Eric Vergne has confirmed that he will stage a Formula Renault 3.5 campaign with SG Formula in 2010 alongside his British Formula 3 assault with Carlin, as predicted by AUTOSPORT
The French driver was quickest in F3 testing with Carlin earlier this week before heading for the first FR3.5 test of the year at Barcelona, where he was teamed with 2009 title contender Marcos Martinez at SG.
Vergne said he had always hoped to race in both championships, and had trained accordingly. There is only one date clash between the two series.
"I'm very happy to be taking part in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series in addition to my British F3 programme," said Vergne. "I have prepared physically this winter to be able to combine both programmes."
The 19-year-old will make F3 his priority, but still hopes to be competitive in the Renault championship.
"My aim is to win the Formula 3 title and create one or two surprises in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series, and it's perfect for me to be able to count on an experienced partner like Marcos Martinez," said Vergne.
His F3 team boss Trevor Carlin told AUTOSPORT last month that he would be very happy for Vergne to race in both categories.
"I'm happy for him to have the opportunity to gain some experience," Carlin said. "I believe in Red Bull's approach to racing. They have a sink or swim philosophy, if their drivers can't jump into a World Series car and do the job then they're not going to be able to jump into an F1 car."
