Carroll on stand-by for Wilson's seat

Adam Carroll is poised to make his Champ Car debut in Mexico City should Justin Wilson decide he is unable to race in the season finale

RuSPORT has acquired special dispensation from Tony Cotman, Champ Car's Vice President of Operations, to allow both Wilson and Carroll to complete 10-15 laps of the Circuit Hermanos Rodriguez on the Thursday before the race.

This is to allow Carroll some extra experience of a Champ Car, in which he has completed just one day of testing, and to allow Wilson to assess his own fitness.

The Briton broke the scaphoid in his right wrist during practice at the last round, in Surfers Paradise.

RuSPORT team president Jeremy Dale told autosport.com: "The idea is to have Adam ready to take over the No. 9 car at any point in the weekend should Justin feel he won't be able to race.

"Adam did a great job in his test with us at Sebring, and these extra laps will make sure that if we need him, he's not stepping in completely cold on a track he's never been to before.

"However, Justin's really keen to make the race. With AJ [Allmendinger] not coming, Justin would get second in the championship just by finishing seventh."

Wilson flew straight from Australia to the Indianapolis clinic of Dr Terry Trammell, who inserted a pin into Wilson's fractured bones and made a carbon-fibre cast.

"Tim Dickey fixed his fracture last Monday and we fitted him with a brace so it sounds like he'll be good to go at Mexico," said Trammell, the orthopedic surgeon who revolutionised racing safety in the US along with Dr. Steve Olvey.

"Justin went over to the Conquest race-shop and sat in one of their cars and shifted and played with the steering wheel. He came back and we made a spare part for the brace, wished him well and sent him on his way."

However, the exceptionally-tall Wilson admitted he's uncertain of the practicalities of movement within the cockpit.

"I'm pretty tight in there as it is," he remarked, "so I don't know how I'll get on with a cast as well. I'm also a bit worried about the kickback from the gear lever on the downchanges.

"If I do have to sit it out, then I'll hang around and help out Adam and Ryan [Briscoe]. We had the best cars on the track at this race last year, so it would be nice to maximize that advantage again."
